Sony UK has just announced that anyone who pre-orders an Xperia Z smartphone will receive a pretty awesome freebie: a set of MDR-1R headphones. These are no cheap, white plastic earbuds either. Sony retails the MDR-1R for $299.99.
Official pricing has popped up in a few markets for the Xperia Z, and UK carrier Three has announced that it’s going to sell the phone for $449 off-contract. The MDR-1R sell for $299 (UK VAT included).
Obviously the premium headphones cost Sony a whole lot less than that to manufacture, but what’s not to like about getting a set of highly-rated cans to plug in to your hot new Android phone?
The Xperia Z was already a very attractive option for shoppers in the market for a high-end Android phone. It’s dust-proof, shatter-proof, highly water-resistant, and its spec sheet stacks up favorably against other companies’ hero devices.
Sony built the Xperia Z around a 5-inch 1080p display and a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor clocked at 1.5GHz. Both HSPA and LTE wireless networks are supported, and a pair of impressive cameras — 13MP on the rear and 2.2MP on the front — should make the Xperia Z a very capable point-and-shoot replacement.
It’s set to arrive on store shelves in late February or early March.
